An inflorescence that is typically a cylindrical spike, ultimately falling as a whole and made up of numerous, small flowers. Flowers tend to have an inconspicuous perianth or no perianth. They are arranged singly or in small groups in the axils of usually crowded and overlapping scale-like bracts e.g. Salix (the willows).
