Description
Habit: A delicate aquatic or terrestial annual, variable.
Stems: Submerged, floating or terrestial.
Leaves: Opposite, undivided; submerged leaves usually linear, terrestial leaves linear to oval; upper leaves forming a terminal rosette.
Flowers: Small, monoecious, submerged or on water surface, without perianth, axillary; male flowers with 1 stamen, 2 mm; female flowers with 4-celled ovary.
Fruits: A group of 4 1-seeded nutlets, obovate, 0.7-1.4 mm, black; wings only present near the tip and absent below; styles erect but falling early.
Note: fruiting material is vital for identification.
Habitat: In dry riverbeds or dry ponds.
