Habit: Annual, to 80 cm high.
Stems: Erect or semi-erect, scarcely mealy, tinged with red especially when fruiting.
Leaves: Variable, triangular, often strongly lobed or toothed.
Flowers: Red, hermaphrodite, in erect and compact inflorescences; tepals 5, often 2-4; stamens 5, sometimes 2-4.
Fruits: An achene, seeds reddish brown, surrounded by thin, translucent or silvery fruit wall, fruit enclosed by tepals.
Habitat: Around lakes and turloughs.
