Description
Habit: A hairy annual, to 30 cm high.
Stems: Erect to semi-erect.
Leaves: Opposite, with stipules, 1-3 cm wide, kidney-shaped in outline, divided more than halfway to the base into 5-7 lobes.
Flowers: Lilac-purple, actinomorphic, hermaphrodite, 10-12 mm across, in pairs; sepals and petals both 5 and free, petals notched at tip; stamens 10; ovary superior.
Fruits: A dry, hairless, wrinkled schizocarp, consisting of five 1-seeded portions which are at first united but later peeling away separately from the central axis, each with a long, persistent and straight style.

Habitat: Sand-dunes, roadsides, waste places, dry grassland and limestone pavement.Distribution: Frequent in the Burren and coastal areas of Galway, rare elsewhere.
