Description
Habit: A bushy, deciduous shrub, to 80 cm high.
Stems: Erect, branched, 2-ridged, woody at the base.
Leaves: Opposite, stalkless and without stipules, 5-10 cm long, entire, oval.
Flowers: Yellow, actinomorphic, hermaphrodite, 2 cm across, in small terminal cymes; sepals 5, free; petals 5, free; stamens in 3 (rarely 5) bundles, as long as the petals; styles 3, shorter than ovary, ovary superior.
Fruits: A capsule, succulent and berry-like, colour from red to black, seeds numerous.
Habitat: Hedges, banks, rocky ground, bushy places and wood-margins.
Distribution: Occasional to frequent.
