Description
Habit: Perennial, to 10 cm high.
Stems: Erect, sometimes with stolons.
Leaves: In a basal rosette, tufted, bright green, erect, 2-10 cm long, linear.
Flowers: Actinomorphic, unisexual, solitary; female flowers stalkless, borne at the base of the male flower stalk, with a small calyx but no petals, ovary superior; male flowers borne on a long flower stalk with white tubular corolla with 4 spreading triangular lobes, stamens 4, on very long filaments.
Fruits: A minute nut, surrounded by brown and membranous pericarp.
Habitat: Lake-shores and turloughs, rarely in rivers, fens or small pools.
Distribution: Occasional to frequent throughout.
