Description
Habit: Perennials, vegetatively grass-like, with a shortly creeping rhizome; stems erect, 10-25cm high; growing in drier places than most species of Juncus.
Leaves: Flat, soft, grass-like leaves edged with long fine, silky hairs, shorter than stem, 3-5mm wide; basal leaves 2-4mm wide, sparsely ciliate.
Flowers: Inflorescence a panicle of one sessile and 3-8 pedunculate clusters of 5-12 flowers; perianth-segments reddish to pale brown, acute, 2.5-3.5mm long; ovary 1-celled, containing 3 seeds, which often bear a white, soft appendage, style longer than ovary; stamens 6, anthers 2-6 times as long as filaments.
Fruits: Capsule, 2.5-3mm, shorter than perianth segments, obovoid to globose; with 3 seeds, seeds more or less globular, 1.1-1.3mm.
Habitat: Dry pastures and banks.
