Description
Habit: Perennials, vegetatively grass-like, rhizome absent; stems densely tufted, erect, to 60cm high; growing in drier places than most species of Juncus.
Leaves: Flat, soft, grass-like leaves edged with long fine, silky hairs; leaves slightly broader than L. campestris; basal leaves 3-4(-6)mm wide, sparsely ciliate.
Flowers: Inflorescence subumbellate, of 3-10(-12) ovate to elongate 8- to 18-flowered clusters on erect branches; perianth-segments pale brown, acute, 2.5-3.5mm long, subequal; ovary 1-celled, containing 3 seeds, which often bear a white, soft appendage, style about as long as ovary; stamens 6, filaments almost as long as the anthers.
Fruits: Capsule, 2-2.8(-3)mm, about as long as or shorter than perianth-segments, ovoid to globose, with 3 seeds, seeds considerably longer than broad.
Habitat: Moors, upland heaths and bog-margins.
