Description
Habit: A hairless annual, to 50 cm high.
Stems: Erect, hard, angular, often blackish, usually branched.
Leaves: Opposite, undivided, stalkless, without stipules, linear to oblong-lanceolate, toothed.
Flowers: Yellow, zygomorphic, hermaphrodite, in loose and leafy terminal spikes; calyx of 4 sepals fused, with 4 teeth, inflated but flattened calyx with narrow mouth; corolla 15 mm long, 4 petals fused strongly into 2-lips, upper lip hooded, laterally compressed and shortly 2-toothed, lower lip shorter than the upper and 3-lobed; stamens 4, borne on corolla tube; ovary superior, 2-celled, style 1.
Fruits: A capsule, flat, as broad as long, seeds flat.
Habitat: Grassland of all types.Distribution: Abundant almost throughout.
