Habit: An erect, deciduous small tree, to 10 m high.
Leaves: Opposite, pinnate, with a terminal leaflet; 5-9 oval, each 5-15 cm long; stipules minute or absent.
Flowers: Creamy white, actinomorphic, scented, numerous in dense cymes; corolla 5 mm, with a very short tube and 5 spreading lobes; stamens 5; style absent, ovary inferior.
Fruits: A black drupe.
Twigs: Pithy.
Bark: Grey.
Habitat: Hedges, woods, waste ground.
Distribution: Locally frequent, but rare over wide areas.
