Description
Habit: A woody shrub, to 30 cm high.
Stems: Creeping, slender and wiry, hairless.
Leaves: Alternate, evergreen, oval, entire, dark green above, whitish beneath.
Flowers: Pinkish-red, in terminal groups of 1-3, on slender, erect pedicels; calyx with 4 short, rounded lobes; corolla divided deeply to 4 lobes and bent backwards; stamens 8-10; ovary inferior.
Fruits: A red berry, 6 mm across.
Habitat: Banks, bog-margins, heathy ground, rocky ridges, occasional in woods.
Distribution: Frequent to abundant on acid soils, very rare on limestone.
