Habit: Annual, with mealy stems, to 100 cm high.
Stems: Erect, branching, mealy.
Leaves: Not mealy, linear to linear-oblong, without basal lobes, entire or slightly toothed.
Flowers: In nearly leafless spikes, unisexual; male with 5 sepals and stamens; female without sepals but with 2 triangular bracteoles, united at the base, without a stalked, spongy at the base, toothed and with a slender acute tip, enlarging and enclosing the ovary and fruit; styles 2.
Fruits: A small nut.

Habitat: Shingle beaches.
Distribution: Very rare.
