Description
Habit: An aquatic or semi-aquatic perennial, variable.
Stems: Submerged, floating or terrestial.
Leaves: Opposite, undivided, mostly submerged; submerged leaves linear with a deeply notched tip; upper floating leaves, if present, oval and forming a terminal rosette.
Flowers: Small, monoecious, axillary, submerged or on water surface, without perianth; male flowers with 1 stamen, 0.5-1 mm long; female flowers with 4-celled ovary.
Fruits: A group of 4 1-seeded nutlets, 1-1.4 mm, as long as wide, winged; styles curved downwards, falling early; fruit stalked when terrestial, not stalked when aquatic; stalk 2-10 mm.

Note: fruiting material is vital for identification.

Habitat: Pools and streams.
Distribution: Rather rare.
