Habit: Herbaceous biennial or perennial, to 1 m high.
Stems: Erect sparsely hispid, sharply 4-angled, with milky latex.
Leaves: Alternate, without stipules; leaves broadly lanceolate to oblong, stem leaves short-stalked and coarsely toothed.
Flowers: Blue, actinomorphic, hermaphrodite, short-stalked, drooping, solitary or in a short raceme; calyx teeth 5; corolla bell-shaped, blue, 25-35 mm, of 5 fused petals, lobed less than half way to the base; stamens 5; ovary inferior.
Fruits: Many seeded capsule.
Habitat: Turloughs and wooded riverbanks.
