Description
Habit: A aquatic, rhizomatous perennial, to 3 m high.
Stems: Erect, aquatic, unbranched, rising above water.
Leaves: In whorls of 10, linear, stalkless, about 25 mm long, undivided, fairly stiff; the submerged leaves longer, wider and limp.
Flowers: Minute, axillary, without calyx and corolla; flowers consist of an ovary with single style and in some flowers also a single stamen.
Fruits: 1-seeded nutlets.

Habitat: Lakes, streams, marshes and turloughs.Distribution: Frequent on limestone, rare elsewhere.
