Description
Habit: Perennial, to 30 cm high.
Stems: Erect, branched.
Leaves: Basal, without stipules, stalked, 5-25 cm long, untoothed, undivided, with one main vein visible.
Flowers: Blueish-mauve, actinomorphic, hermaphrodite, numerous and spread out in branched and open cymes on flowering stems which are bumpy to the touch; calyx fused and tubular with 5 lobes, lobed finely toothed and pointed, alternating with 5 smaller lobes, dry and membranous, greenish purple; petals 5, free or slightly fused at the base, bluish mauve; stamens 5; ovary superior, 1-celled, styles 5.
Fruits: A 1-seeded capsule, minute.
Habitat: Salt-marshes, muddy or stony seashores.Distribution: Frequent to occasional around Galway Bay, rare elsewhere.
