Description
Habit: An aromatic perennial, to 90 cm high.
Stems: Erect, square, often reddish stems, with rhizomes.
Leaves: Opposite, hairy, stalked, undivided, oval, coarsely toothed and pointed.
Flowers: Mauve, almost actinomorphic, numerous in a compact ovoid or globular head, with 1-2 additional whorls lower down the stem; calyx hairy, tubular, 5-toothed, teeth slender and pointed; corolla tubular, bell-shaped with 4 short lobes, of which one is broader and notched; stamens 4, attached to the corolla, equal in length; ovary superior.
Fruits: A group of 4 1-seeded nutlets.

Habitat: Marshes, ditches, lake-shores and other wet areas.Distribution: Frequent to abundant but rather local.
