Description
Habit: An aromatic perennial, to 60 cm high.
Stems: Erect or spreading, square, with rhizomes.
Leaves: Opposite, hairy, stalked, undivided, lanceolate to nearly round, slightly toothed.
Flowers: Pinkish-mauve, almost actinomorphic, numerous in axillary whorl-like clusters, spread out along the stem; calyx tubular, 5-toothed, teeth triangular; corolla tubular, bell-shaped with 4 short lobes, of which one is broader and notched; stamens 4, attached to the corolla, equal in length; ovary superior.
Fruits: A group of 4 1-seeded nutlets.

Habitat: Roadsides, turloughs, lake-shores, cultivated ground.Distribution: Frequent on limestone, rare elsewhere.
