Description
Habit: An erect, hairy annual, to 25 cm high.
Stems: Unbranched or sparingly branched stems.
Leaves: Narrowly oblong to lanceolate; basal leaves tapered to petiole-like base, upper leaves unstalked.
Flowers: Yellow or cream when in bud, turning pink and then blue when opening, actinomorphic, 2 mm across, in terminal, spiralled cymes; calyx lobed nearly to the base with 5 triangular teeth, with hooked, sometimes spreading hairs; corolla with 5 spreading lobes, tube usually lengthening to longer than calyx; ovary superior.
Fruits: A group of 4, dark green, very small 1-seeded nutlets.

Habitat: Roadsides, cultivated ground, dry, open habitats and also wet meadows.
Distribution: Widespread but rather rare.
