Description
Habit: An aquatic perennial.
Stems: Submerged, fleshy, with stout rhizomes.
Leaves: Alternate, undivided, mainly floating on water surface, with very long leaf stalks, blade 20x15 cm, untoothed; floating leaves broadly oval, deeply cordate, green on both sides; submerged leaves thinner, with wavy margins, veins clearly visible near the margin.
Flowers: Yellow, actinomorphic, hermaphrodite, 5 cm across, borne at the water surface or raised slightly above, solitary and on very long flower stalks; perianth of numerous free sepals and petals that grade into numerous stamens; sepals green; petals yellow; stamens yellow; carpels numerous, united or embedded separately in the receptacle, ovary superior.
Fruits: A bottle-shaped fleshy capsule, with numerous seeds; ripening above water surface.

Habitat: Lakes, slow streams, bog-pools. Distribution: Occasional to frequent throughout in suitable habitats.
