Description
Habit: Biennial or annual, to 1.5 m high.
Stems: Erect or ascending, hollow, grooved.
Roots: Tuberous, but root tubers absent at maturity.
Leaves: 2-3-pinnate, submerged leaves narrow and linear, aerial leaves oblong, usually pinnately lobed, lanceolate to oval.
Flowers: White, in small umbels opposite the leaves, short stalked, with 7-12 rays, umbel stalk shorter than the rays; bracts absent, bracteoles several; petals 5, free; stamens 5; ovary inferior and 2-celled.
Fruits: A schizocarp, 3-4.5 mm, ovoid.

Habitat: Streams, riversides, lake-margins.
