Description
Habit: A slightly hairy perennial, to 60 cm high.
Stems: Erect, white or sometimes yellow latex; flower stalks with coarse, spreading hairs.
Leaves: Alternate, pinnate with pinnately lobed leaflets, stalkless.
Flowers: Red, actinomorphic, 5-10 cm across, solitary; sepals 2, falling when the flower opens; petals 4, free, large, crumpled and papery first, falling early, outer pair larger than inner; stamens numerous, anthers bluish-black; ovary superior.
Fruits: A capsule, with numerous seeds, hairless, almost globular, about 2 cm long.

Habitat: Cultivated fields, roadsides.Distribution: Occasional on the limited region of the Burren, rare elsewhere.
