Description
Habit: Perennial, to 1.2 m high.
Stems: Erect, stout, with a creeping rhizome, forming extensive clumps.
Leaves: Alternate or basal, to 25 cm long, short-stalked, undivided, untoothed, oval-lanceolate, pointed; stipules whitish or brown, united to form a sheath surrounding stem or leaf stalk.
Flowers: White, actinomorphic, numerous in a diffuse, freely branched, leafy, axillary or terminal panicle; tepals 5, free, not winged; stamens 8; ovary superior, 1-celled, style 1, divided into 2 or 3.
Fruits: A small nut, 3-angled or 3-winged.

Habitat: Roadsides, occasionally on riverbanks.Distribution: Fairly frequent.
