Description
Habit: A hairy or hairless perennial, to 50 cm high.
Stems: Erect, cylindrical, furrowed, longer than leaves.
Leaves: In a basal rosette, spreading to erect; undivided, lanceolate, with a few hairs.
Flowers: Actinomorphic, hermaphrodite, small, in dense spikes 1-3 cm long; sepals 4, free or slightly united at the base, membranous, with green or brown midrib; petals 4, membranous, united to form a short tube with 4 spreading and triangular lobes, whitish or brownish; stamens 4, on long and usually white filaments, anthers pale yellow or white; ovary 4-celled, superior.
Fruits: A capsule with 2 dark brown and shining seeds about 3 mm long.

Habitat: Meadows, pastures, rough grazing areas, sand-dunes, roadsides and other habitats.Distribution: Abundant throughout.
