Description
Habit: A hairy perennial, to 40 cm high.
Stems: Erect, stem expanded at the base into swollen underground stem.
Leaves: Spirally arranged, usually without stipules, 3-lobed and finely divided, triangular in outline; lower leaves with long stalks.
Flowers: Yellow, actinomorphic, hermaphrodite, 2-3 cm across; sepals 5, free, bent backwards down the flowering stem; petals 5; stamens numerous, indefinite and free; ovary superior.
Fruits: A cluster of achenes, 2-4 mm, hairless, with short and hooked beak.

Habitat: Dry pastures, sand-dunes, rocky ground.Distribution: Very frequent on the limestone and locally on sand-dunes, rare elsewhere.
