Habit: A hairless biennial, to 1.5 m high.
Stems: Erect, stiff.
Leaves: Alternate, undivided, narrowly lanceolate, with wavy edges.
Flowers: Yellow, zygomorphic, in long spikes or racemes; sepals 4, free; petals 4, the upper one larger and deeply divided; stamens numerous, 20-25; ovary superior, 1-celled.
Fruits: A capsule, 3-6 mm.
Habitat: Roadsides, sandpits, quarries and gravelly soils.Distribution: Occasional on lowland limestone, unknown elsewhere.
