Description
Habit: A hairless perennial, to 1.2 m high.
Stems: Erect, stout with sub-erect branches.
Leaves: Alternate, undivided, truncate or cordate at base, broadly oblong, with slightly crenate margins; stipules united to form a sheath surrounding stem or leaf stalk.
Flowers: Actinomorphic, stalked, in whorls forming dense, leafless, terminal and axillary panicles; tepals 6, 5-6 mm, not winged, inner 3 larger and enlarging in fruit, strongly toothed with teeth to 1 mm, 1 of the inner 3 with a larger swelling, the 2 with smaller swellings; stamens 6; ovary superior, 1-celled, style 3.
Fruits: A small nut, 3-angled.

Habitat: Roadsides, pastures, waste ground and sand-dunes; more rarely as a weed of cultivated ground.
Distribution: Very frequent throughout.
