Description
Habit: A hairless perennial, to 1 m high.
Stems: Erect.
Leaves: Alternate, undivided, truncate or cordate at base, broadly oblong, with slightly crenate margins; stipules united to form a sheath surrounding stem or leaf stalk.
Flowers: Actinomorphic, stalked, in whorls forming slender and sparse terminal and axillary panicles or racemes, leafy only at the extreme base; tepals 6, not winged, inner 3 larger and enlarging in fruit, 1 of these with a swelling; stamens 6; ovary superior, 1-celled, style 3.
Fruits: A small nut, 3-angled.
Habitat: Hedgerows, roadsides, wood-margins, pastures.Distribution: Rare in Galway and exposed parts of the Burren, frequent and locally abundant elsewhere.
