Description
Habit: A hairless annual, up to 40 cm, usually yellowish-green to bright yellow, parts sometimes red or purple.
Stems: Erect or semi-erect, straight, variably branched, fleshy, jointed, concealed by leaves.
Leaves: Apparently leafless but fleshy opposite leaves are pressed tight to the stem, partly fused together, concealing the stem.
Flowers: Terminal spikes up to 8 cm long; flowers green, in groups of 1-3, flowers more or less the same size; fertile segments with straight or slightly convex sides; stamens 2, anthers 0.6-0.9 mm; ovary superior, 1-celled.
Fruits: An achene, 1.5-2.3 mm.

Habitat: Salt-marshes.
Distribution: Fairly frequent but local.
