Habit: Annual, to 50 cm high.
Stems: Much-branched, spreading, trailing or erect.
Leaves: Small, fleshy, pale bluish green leaves and bracts, tip with a sharp spine; lower leaves cylindrical and linear; upper ones shorter, flattened and triangular; bracts leaf-like.
Flowers: Green, hermaphrodite, stalkless, in axils, slightly fleshy, with a spine at the tip; tepals 5, stamens 5, ovary superior, styles 2.
Fruits: A small nut, completely enclosed in persistent tepals.
Habitat: Sandy shores.
