Description
Habit: Perennial, to 40 cm high.
Stems: Mostly hairless, except near the tip; densely tufted with a stout taproot.
Leaves: Opposite, 25 mm, simple, fleshy, linear, with membranous stipules; usually hairless.
Flowers: Lilac-pink in outer part, white at base; actinomorphic; 8-12 mm across; in terminal cymes; sepals 5; petals 5, slightly longer than sepals; styles 3; stamens 8-10; ovary superior.
Fruits: A capsule, 7-9 mm, seeds 0.7-1 mm, winged.

Habitat: Salt-marshes, rarely rocks or stony shores.
Distribution: Occasional.
