Habit: A strongly suckering shrub, to 2 m high.
Stems: Erect.
Leaves: Alternate, without stipules, hairless, undivided, oblong, toothed.
Flowers: Pink, actinomorphic, hermaphrodite, small in dense panicles; calyx of 5 sepals; petals 5, free; stamens numerous; carpels 5, on a flat receptacle.
Fruits: A several-seeded follicle.

Habitat: Planted in hedges, naturalised in boggy ground.Distribution: Naturalised only in few locations.
