Habit: Perennial.
Stems: Erect, hollow, hairless.
Leaves: All basal, usually moderately lobed; often with dark spots.
Flowers: Yellow, flower-heads solitary on peduncles, florets all ligulate; involucre of an inner row of long, equal bracts, and numerous shorter outer ones; outer bracts erect or pressed close to the inner ones, without membranous edge, without small protuberance, florets all ligulate.
Fruits: An achene, bearing, at the end of a long beak, a white pappus of unbranched hairs.
Habitat: Wet, acid grassland and roadsides.
