Description
Habit: Perennial, to 50 cm high.
Stems: Erect.
Leaves: Opposite, without stipules, undivided, oblong-lanceolate, untoothed or very shallowly toothed; stalkless above, short-stalked below.
Flowers: Pale blue to lilac with darker veins, nearly actinomorphic, hermaphrodite, 6 mm across, in opposite and axillary racemes; calyx deeply 4-lobed; corolla slightly irregularly 4-lobed, with a very short tube; stamens 2, borne on corolla tube; ovary superior, 2-celled, style 1.
Fruits: A capsule, 2-lobed, not strongly flattened, scarcely notched at tip.

Habitat: Ditches, streamsides, marshes and lake-shores.Distribution: Frequent on low-lying limestone, rather rare elsewhere.
