Description
Habit: Perennial to 1 m high.
Stems: Stiff, erect, short-hairy.
Leaves: Opposite or in whorls of 3, stalkless, without stipules, 5-10 cm long, untoothed, lanceolate.
Flowers: Reddish-purple, actinomorphic, 8-10 mm, in dense whorls forming terminal spikes; calyx with 12 teeth, teeth of two types, narrowly triangular and rounded; petals 6; stamens 12, attached inside of the calyx tube; ovary superior, style single.
Fruits: A capsule.

Habitat: Lake-shores, riverbanks, marshes, wet grassland.Distribution: Very frequent to abundant.
